Berries from the bush, apples from the tree. Sometimes they don't fall far. It may take some time to harvest them all (or even getting round to starting it!), sort out the good ones, make something out of them, something that does something to you in the end, hopefully. The refining or maturing may take many many years. Or it could be done in a week, with the same results. But this was just a hobby to us, so we never rushed.
These are the last songs we ever did. After we finished our ten-or-more-years-in-the-"making" Série noire album, there was a burst of some new songs. Not so many, but music we enjoyed playing. We practiced them until they were ready, played a couple of gigs even, then went to Markku's place, which has moved to another place since. Laid down the basic tracks in one day, added some guitars and vocals, and even fooled around a little bit on the second day. Even the lyrics came pretty easily this time, though - as usual - they may seem quite cryptic at times. Sometimes I'm not even sure if they are correct English or make any sense! The cover song choice - the mighty Black Sabbath's Electric Funeral - was a kind of sequel to our previous recorded one - Joy Division's 24 Hours - both classics, but we wanted to do them anyway, and to do them our own way, at the same time respecting the originals. Don't get too pissed off.
At first we were thinking about doing a 12". Then time passed, we never seemed to have enough money at the same time. It took too much time, again. So we finally settled for a digital release. Why produce more waste, we would probably sell 10-20 copies of vinyl or cd, and the rest would stay in boxes in our closets or under our beds, waiting for the next move.
I don't know, why and how these final songs came to me. In my head they form a whole, there's a couple of slow tempo ones, and a couple of faster rockers. It was nice to play them, and I want to thank Mikko and Antti for being there, rocking out. You cannot develop playing and telepathy like this too many times during your life, it takes years. This band was a part of our lives, and always will be. Eternal thanks to Markku as well, he recorded and mixed the whole thing, and did a great job.
